Australian’s Anne and James Digby met Shreeram Adhikari whilst on their honeymoon in Nepal in 2004 and struck up an immediate and lasting friendship. James returned to Nepal in 2011 to volunteer with Child Reach Nepal and Anne, a midwife, came in 2012 to volunteer with the independent, midwife-led APS birth centre.
Journey Nepal began as Healthcare Helping Nepal in 2012 and was founded to help support APS birth centre. The initial idea was to bring interested health professionals and students to visit and help out with the various partner organisations, especially the birth centre.
Not long after the initial trip, Anne and Shree developed the plan for Journey Nepal. The name came from the literal and metaphorical journey of the trip participants. Journey Nepal is a registered social welfare organisation in Nepal, and the fundraising arm is Journey Nepal Foundation which is a registered Charity in Australia.
